How to Create the Perfect Home Study

Every room in your home should work well for its purpose, from a stylish and welcoming living room to a well laid-out and practical kitchen. One of the most important spaces to get the balance of style and practicality right is in the home study. It needs to be optimised in terms of ergonomics to keep you focused, but it should also suit your personality and tastes in the style stakes.

With more and more large companies and popular brands creating enviable office spaces it is paving a new era for home work spaces too. Inspiration can be drawn from tech giants Google, whose interior design concept is relatively similar in every country; a visual representation of a typical keyword, like in Budapest their office is styled as a Spa. Or why not look to the growing number of start-ups and their inventive use of office space, like Pact Coffee and their aerial silks for budding acrobats.

MoreySmith are experts in the field as the architectural design practice responsible for some of the most stylish head offices in the UK. From ASOS and Primark, to Coca-Cola, they have created inspiring office spaces for many of today’s leading brands. Linda Morey-Burrows, Principal Director, shares her expert tips on how to create the perfect home study with The LuxPad below…

Creating the perfect home study is simple to achieve if you stick to some basic principles:

    1. Try not to make your study look or feel too much like an office. Some of the best offices nowadays tend to look more like hotels and cafes than offices and they usually have a homely feel which helps workers feel relaxed and at ease.

    1. The most important thing to remember is to keep your work separate to the rest of your home, particularly your sleeping and relaxation areas. It is important not to blur the lines between work and life too much as you don’t want it to disturb your leisure/relaxation or sleep time.

    1. Good natural daylight is really important so try to find a space in your home that captures as much sunlight as possible. A space that is reasonably quiet, tucked away from the children, TV or whatever might pose a distraction, is also worth bearing in mind.

    1. Comfort is key so make sure you have a comfortable chair that encourages good posture, a sturdy table and a task light to control your lighting levels.

    1. Try to design the space to reflect the nature of work you do. This is your opportunity to create an office that is designed specifically to suit you. It may even be that, like me, you choose to work in different parts of the house depending on what you are doing – creating, drawing, thinking, reading documents.
