As the nights start to creep in and the days are darker it’s time to think about restyling your lighting scheme to fit the season. A badly lit room is nightmare at the best of times let alone in the fluctuating natural light of one of the gloomiest times of year. The LuxPad spoke to Simon Macro, one half of design team FRESHWEST who have just launched the Stupa Light for Innermost, to ask him his best advice on how to get lighting right in your interior this season.

What is the most important room in the house to get right when it comes to lighting?

Every room is important, it is difficult to single out one in particular, but guess it’s the room where you spend most of your time. So for me it’s my kitchen come living room which is one space. I have designed it so that the kitchen is really bright. I have some directional spots that bounce light of the ceiling towards the kitchen area, a pendent over the table and then floor and side lamps, all can be dimmed.

What is your best advice for someone looking to add interior style through table lamps?

Go for something that looks as interesting off as it does on.

How would you incorporate a floor lamp into a living room?

Floor lamps can be a great way to create atmosphere or define a particular space in a room. I don’t think there are any hard and fast rules, just think about what you want it for. Is it to light a particular area for a functional reason or is it there to create atmosphere?!

What is the biggest mistake people make when it comes to lighting their interior?

Not giving themselves enough options. Have dimmers whenever possible and also, wall switches that operate your floor and side lamps.

What is your best advice for using lighting in the home in the darker months?

There is nothing more depressing than a dark or low lit room during the day, I always switch on all the lights as soon as I walk into a space that lacks natural light. Luckily there are now some really good low energy bulbs that are nice and bright.

Do you have a favourite lighting design – if so why?

Well you can’t go wrong with the classic Anglepoise. It is so versatile, not just in its function but the fact that it looks good whatever space you put it in. They always seem to add a bit of sophistication.

What should you avoid when looking at ways to light your interior space?

Well I hate inlaid dichroic ceiling lights; I think we may look back at those the way we look back at avocado bathrooms…

Is there ever such a thing as too much lighting – if so how can you avoid this?

Well the beauty of having too much lighting is that you can always switch some of it off. However sometimes you see a crazy mix of inlaid ceiling lights, pendants and wall lights all really close together in the same space. Never do that.

What is your best advice for revamping a lighting scheme on a budget?

You can always buy some small cheap second-hand table lamps from a charity shop or car boot sale, put them on the floor and hide them behind your furniture. Accent lighting like that in a space can look great and is inexpensive.

Up your lighting game this season and invest in some new designs to brighten your interior, shop lighting now and discover designs from Innermost, Kartell, Tom Dixon and more.
