If you thought decorating was fun, just wait till you get started on a kids’ room. There is no other space in a home where you can get away with such whimsical joy and creativity. However, with so much choice, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. So, before you get swept away with moodboards and colour charts, follow these easy steps to make sure their room is both stylish and functional.

    1. Go gender-free

Whether you’re having a boy, a girl or are waiting to find out, ignore the traditional ‘blue for boys’ and ‘pink for girls’ nursery design rules. Stylish gender-neutral schemes, like cool neutrals, monochrome, pastels and crayon brights, are more contemporary and will work for any child.

    1. Rock your chair

Very few parents have babies who sleep through the night from a young age. So make your night wake ups as special as possible with a comfortable and stylish rocking chair. It will help sooth baby back to sleep and will become a fun reading chair when they are older.

    1. Create a gallery wall

Use statement shelving to display toys and books.  If you stick to beautifully crafted and illustrated pieces, the combination will not only be practical, but will transform a feature wall into an eye-catching gallery.

    1. Choose smart toy storage

Despite their small size, most children have a lot of playthings. So toy storage solutions are essential to keep their bedrooms clutter-free. Choose pieces that will easily allow your child to tidy away their toys all by themselves, leaving you with one less line on your to do list.

    1. Learn through play

Early years’ education focuses on learning through play. Look out for educational toys that are beautifully crafted. They will not only support your child’s development, but look super cool too, making them a fabulous addition to any kids’ room.

    1. Shrink design classics

Themed children’s furniture in the shape of pirate ships or castles may entertain your little one for a while, but will soon become outdated. Instead choose sleek simple pieces that will grow with the child. Look out for mini versions of iconic design classics, which are not only functional, but adorable too.

    1. Use happy accessories

Inject the nursery with personality and finish off the design with colourful and happy accessories. Graphic prints, animal shapes and bold slogans are a big trend in kids’ interiors. Small additions like rugs, cushions or wall art will make a huge difference and are easy to swap out as your child grows.
