This year we have already seen an abundance of botanical trends hitting the catwalk and our home interiors. An annual favourite, botanicals never go out of style, mainly because there is so much scope for how they can be used, from patterns and texture to colour. With so many options it can be hard to know where to begin when looking to add botanicals to your home style. Rachael White, a course leader at the world renowned KLC School of Design in West London, shares her expert advice with The LuxPad below…

Stylish botanicals come in all shapes and sizes nowadays and when used properly, they can really lift a flat interior to another level. There are so many unique ways to use this enduring trend, I’ve narrowed it down to just a few of my favourites:

     1) Go bold in the kitchen or hallway with these super modern, extra-large wall stickers. Keep colours and accessories pared back to avoid it looking overdone.

    2) Why not experiment with unusual botanical fabrics? This one featuring pineapples and iguanas by Timorous Beasties is 1360mm wide and the pattern repeats every 846mm, making it perfect for curtains, cushions and other fabric accessories.

    3) Choose bold prints for upholstery and team them up with a plain colour to create a modern effect. For example, you could use one of these wonderful fabrics from Osborne & Little to line the back of a feature chair, but the main seat cushion and inner back with a plain fabric.

    4) Keep it real and create your own terrariums! The great thing is you can put the plants in pretty much any glass, ceramic, concrete or terracotta container to create something quite quirky and original.

If you don’t have a lot of shelf space, you could even hang them at different levels in front of windows for an interesting display…

    5) Alternatively, split a bunch of flowers between lots of smaller vases to create your own living version of the old botanical portraits by Dutch artists such as Jakob Vossmaer. Consider the contrasts you can make with different colour flowers – the whites and bright greens of the flowers look beautiful against this deep green wall.

    6) Remember the naff pressed flower images that were big in the ’70s and ’80s, probably found in your Nan’s living room? Well these are being revived and being given a fresh, 21st century facelift…

    7) My final tip is the simplest one – try mixing a flash of bright botanicals to soften the hard edges of a streamlined industrial look…
