There is nothing like a room makeover to boost your mood and uplift the whole atmosphere of your home. We don’t mean go out and spend a small fortune knocking down walls and laying a brand new wood floor (this is obviously fabulous if you can), but a few small touches and some clever planning means you can easily restyle your living space on a budget. After surviving January, officially the most depressing month of the year, we all deserve a little boost, and reinventing a room is a practical and lasting change that we can all benefit from. Rearranging the furniture is something many of us might associate with being a child at home (remember when you would think it was brilliant idea – start and then instantly regret it whilst realising how time consuming it could be or was that just me?) but it is a great way of changing a room’s look without changing the contents.
Make do and mend isn’t just a saying that relates to clothes, this little adage is becoming a trend in its own right within today’s culture, including interiors. Reinvent your existing furniture by customising the details, new knobs on a dresser or coverings on a dining chair can be simple to do and very effective. Upcycling is the new new –combining a unique & thrifty style it is also a fun way to spend an afternoon, try covering a tired wardrobe in wallpaper and see how it can transform your space.
Accentuate property features that are already there, the most obvious feature to make the most of are the windows. Unlike fireplaces, beams or exposed brick work, every property benefits from windows and whatever style you are blessed with you can transform your living space by paying attention to them. Firstly make sure they are clean – inside & out, and then add new curtains or a lick of paint to the frames, finally add a decorative accessory, such as a vase or lantern to the windowsills if any.
A big mistake that often occurs when trying to do something on a budget is that we are tempted to go cheap, but be warned this is never going to be cheerful. Lots of cheap home accessories will look very forced, cluttered, and will look temporary. Investing in one or two luxury key pieces will mean lasting style and if you choose carefully many pieces of furniture or designer soft furnishings can transcend seasons and trends, which is a lot more than can be said for cheaper items.
Finally don’t forget to freshen up the details of a room space. After rearranging furniture tatty paint work can be revealed, or when reinventing an old piece of furniture the original soft furnishings may need an update to. Don’t be tempted to neglect that torn cushion or tatty rug, with any interior details are what determine the finished look of a space, being a perfectionist is priceless.
