When it comes to restyling your home, from a complete overhaul to a quick room refresh, lighting often gets left in the dark. The colour scheme and soft furnishings are what spring to mind when we start to create a new interior scheme, textures and patterns all being considered, but usually the existing lighting will be kept. Lighting should be one of the first things to consider when deciding to transform your home space, it can change the way a room looks instantly and in turn affect the entire design. Lighting often gets overlooked, because people underestimate greatly the potential it has for changing the way a room looks and feels. As well as literally brightening a space, lighting can also create careful shadows and transform the atmosphere in a room, creating  a cosy space in the evening or a vibrant area in the morning.

Think about task lighting and get this right and the rest of the room will follow. Table lamps, floor lamps, and pendant lights can create a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere, ideal for helping to make your house feel like a home. There are so many different styles of lighting it can be overwhelming trying to find were to start, we recommend thinking about what you need from your lighting and then what you want. The living room is often the hub of a family house, and therefore needs to be several different things at once; cosy, bright and relaxed. For this multipurpose space the answer is to provide several different lighting options, use a pendant for the centre to provide the general lighting and then accented table and floor lamps to brighten up dark corners and to provide reading and or working light.

Kitchens benefit from spot lighting, bright and easy to target the work spaces this style of lighting can still be stylish but needs to be highly practical. Bedroom lighting options lend themselves well to being design features, coordinate the style with existing or revised interior schemes, from colours to patterns and themes. A brightly coloured statement pendant light can offer a welcome focal point in an otherwise busy patterned bedroom. Or for those with busier bedroom designs, a subtly coordinating table lamp can offer a reading light and stylish accessory feature.

Don’t forget that candles and artistic lighting, although perhaps less practical than the aforementioned options, can also add to the overall style and atmosphere of any space. A child’s bedroom can be beautifully accented by lighting with fun designs, from a night light to a handcrafted lampshade. Candles can provide a romantic setting as well as brightening up forgotten alcoves or otherwise lost spaces such as plain shelves. Instead of saving it as an afterthought utilise lighting to create stylish and practical living spaces. From the bedroom to the kitchen, lighting the way can make all the difference in the home style stakes.
